Introduction

The department of Speech Communication was founded in 1992. Since then, it has been the only department offering the professional education of Speech Communication in the country. Tradition and creation are integrated into our expectation and vision.

To cultivate those communication experts who can carry out the traditional knowledge and create the new territory, our teaching mission and course purposes are aiming at “the forming of three course-divisions,” “the instruction of four fundamental knowledge,” and “the development of five professional skills.”

The forming of three course- divisions is to meet the need of social change and the transformation of higher education in the academic disciplines. All the required courses are reorganized into three divisions, namely, “media expression division” “interview and communication division,” and “conflict and coordinate division.” It is highly expected that the students will develop four categories of the basic knowledge of the new generation citizens: Rhetorical knowledge, interpersonal knowledge, organizational knowledge and cross-cultural knowledge.

In the meantime, the students will be equipped with the five basic skills to meet the challenge of new job markets. The five skills are “leadership and communication,” “briefing and presentation,” “coordination and negotiation,” persuasion and marketing,” and “planning and executing”

In 2003, the department began to offer master program in the hope to educate more speech communication professionals who are experts in communication and negotiator in order to promote the competitive and cooperative capabilities domestically and internationally.
