| The University was founded in 1956 and the department was founded in 1958. The University exists primarily to train undergraduate students with awareness of, and responsibility in, the ethical and social significance of interpersonal and mass media usage. The RTF department, which offers courses of study for those who seek careers in the area of Radio, TV and Film, is one of eighteen academic departments in the University. The department divides itself into three areas, which are Radio, TV, and Film. There are 18 faculty members (7 with doctoral degrees) and 1200 students in the department. The facilities include: one professional TV studio, editing rooms, TV/Film production & post-production equipment, two radio stations, and a small theater. The film division of the department offers an overall understanding of film studies. Required courses such as Film history, theory/criticism, and video/16mm film production are all given to students to take beginning with second year. Freshman students are conventionally immersed in general education in liberal arts and humanities. Recently, several specialized classes are being started to contribute to boosting Taiwan's film industry as a whole. Subjects, such as film production management, film distribution and promotion, audience research etc., are considered important in this division. Although in an experimental phase, these subjects are definitely going to become a characteristic in our film program. For the time being, students in production class are still offered many opportunities to make movies. As a consequence, students continually get their appearance in many local awards. Renowned figures have been emerging from such an environment. There are several hundred graduates from the department up to now. Several names of celebrity, mostly film directors, have won awards nationally, such as the Golden House Award in Taiwan. To name but a few, they are Yu Kai Pin, and Chang Yi, and Ke, Yi-Jeng. |
