Theme: The world in 20 years ¡V problems and solution
Over the past twenty years, the world has undergone major changes in almost all imaginable areas. In 1988, the Soviet Union still existed; the BRIC countries enjoyed very little economic growth; the Euro was not a currency, the World Wide Web was yet to be invented; the price of oil was less than 20 dollars a barrel; the fear of global warming was much less discussed; many households did not own PCs; and so forth. It is very likely that some of the students who apply for the JAL Scholarship Program this year were not born 20 years ago¡K You are encouraged to imagine your possible role for the next 20 years.

The World in 20 Years- Problems and Solutions
A Discussion of Global Warming

¡@¡@As the old saying goes, ¡§Every coin has two sides;¡¨ while human beings continue to enjoy the convenience brought by the massive progression of human technology over the past few decades, we also have to bear the negative consequences as well. Throughout the past few years, on account of the alarming population growth, the demanding for more and more natural resources, and all kinds of pollutions, Mother Nature has reached her limits. Words such as ¡§El Nino,¡¨ ¡§dust storms,¡¨ ¡§sea inundation,¡¨ and ¡§landslides¡¨ are no longer unfamiliar to us. Their existences not only occur in encyclopedias, but also in our daily newspapers as well. These make us ponder uneasily about one serious question, ¡§What would the world be in twenty years?¡¨
¡@¡@To answer this question, the crux which we should focus on is definitely the ¡§climate change,¡¨ often considered as ¡§global warming.¡¨ This issue has brought up a widespread discussion in the past decade. Its overwhelming influence on the world's economy, politics, and lawmaking is beyond imagination. ¡§Global warming will affect international relationships for a long time to come,¡¨ former US vice president Al Gore said in an international conference, ¡§it is clear it is one of the central challenges of our time and will affect literally every person on earth.¡¨ Al Gore's Academy Award-winning documentary ¡§An Inconvenient Truth¡¨ appeals the world to put a new premium on the severe climate change problem.
¡@¡@Climate change is a natural phenomenon which has been happening since the formation of the earth itself. Nevertheless, this normal and stable process has been disturbed drastically by human causes in the past twenty years. The ¡§Greenhouse Effect¡¨ is a very widespread term which could be explained in a very simple way¡K.
